Now you have something to look forward to on Mondays…

We’re having a very special edition of Fourth Monday Book Club this month featuring Dear Ann by Bobbie Ann Mason, selected by the Kentucky Humanities Council as the centerpiece of their 2022 Kentucky Reads project.

  • The discussion will be led by Dr. Morris Allen Grubbs. A native of Cumberland County, Kentucky, Dr. Grubbs is Assistant Dean in the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky. His primary research and teaching interests are the history and theory of short fiction internationally, with a focus on the short story of the American south. He is editor of Home and Beyond: An Anthology of Kentucky Short Stories and Conversations with Wendell Berry and co-editor of Every Leaf a Mirror: A Jim Wayne Miller Reader.
  • This program is part of Kentucky Humanities’ statewide literacy initiative, Kentucky Reads. For more information on Kentucky Reads and events taking place throughout the state, visit kyhumanities.org.
  • Complimentary copies of the novel, provided by Kentucky Humanities, are available while supplies last. If you would like a copy and plan to join the discussion, please contact e-mail LaDonna at [email protected].

ABOUT THE NOVEL
In the transformative years of the late 1960s, smart yet naive misfit Ann Workman has traveled from rural Kentucky to graduate school in search of an education and the “Real Thing”—to be in love with someone who loves her equally. Then Jimmy appears, as if by magic. A misfit like Ann, Jimmy is a rebel who rejects his upper-class Midwestern upbringing and questions everything. But with the Vietnam War looming and the country in turmoil, their future together is uncertain.

Many years later, Ann recalls this time of innocence—and her own obsession with Jimmy—as she faces another life crisis. Seeking escape from her problems, she tries to imagine where she might be if she had chosen differently all those years ago. What if she had gone to Stanford University instead of a small school on the East Coast? Would she have been caught up in the Summer of Love and its subsequent dark turns? Or would her own good sense have saved her from disaster?

ABOUT FOURTH MONDAY BOOK CLUB

Book lovers unite on the fourth Monday of the month! Join us for a relaxing evening at the library to discuss our latest book selection chosen by the group. Each meetup will be a new experience and you never know what will happen—you might get to lead the discussion (but only if you want!), or a special guest might make an appearance!

BONUS ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

  • Readers receive a copy of the book to keep!
  • Movie nights! If a movie adaptation of our selected titles exists, a film viewing will be scheduled a few days after our regular meeting.

UPCOMING SELECTIONS:

Complimentary books and seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Questions? Call 543-7675 ext. 2552 or e-mail [email protected].
