JOIN BCPL IN CELEBRATING THE EVERYDAY HEROES OF OUR COMMUNITY

Heroes don’t always wear capes! Sometimes, the greatest heroes are the everyday people who work to help others and improve their communities. Obviously, this includes first responders like police officers and firefighters, but local volunteers and people who look out for their neighbors are also heroes in their own right.

In honor of those individuals and anyone who wants to discover ways they can give back too, Bullitt County Public Library is hosting its first ever Community Heroes Festival on Saturday, March 23rd. Press Release: Centennial Commemoration

December 14th, 2017

LIBRARY & LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUM COMMEMORATE THE SHEPHERDSVILLE TRAIN WRECK OF 1917

SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY – On December 20, 1917, what has been remembered as possibly the worst train wreck in L&N Railroad history took place in Shepherdsville only yards from the lot where Ridgway Memorial Library would be built many years later.

On that cold winter evening a century ago, the No. 41 train carried approximately one hundred passengers as it pulled into the station in Shepherdsville. No. 41’s travelers were likely coming from a day of Christmas shopping, visiting friends and family, or running errands in the city, when the No. 7 Express train collided with them at twenty-five miles an hour. In a matter of moments, the No. 41 was demolished.

By the wee hours of the next morning, forty-nine people—ages ranging from sixty-nine to as young as eight months—were confirmed dead. The tale of the 1917 train wreck is a sad and unfortunate series of events.

Press Release: National Library Week 2017

April 5th, 2017

TRANSFORM YOUR IDEAS ABOUT THE LIBRARY: Celebrate National Library Week April 9th–15th

This week, the Bullitt County Public Library (BCPL) joins libraries in schools, campuses, and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the dynamic changes that are happening in today’s libraries. Libraries today aren’t only a place of quiet study and a place to check out books, but also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate, explore new technologies like 3D printing, or just relax with friends old and new.

Libraries and librarians are change agents within their communities— transforming lives through innovative educational resources and forward-thinking programming. Libraries are doing their part to close the digital divide and level the playing field by providing free access to information and technologies that many in their communities would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.

Librarians work with elected officials, small business owners, educators, students, and the public at large to discover and meet the needs of their communities. Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, and programs for job seekers or through providing a safe haven in times of crisis, librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.

Press Release: It’s Fine Forgiveness Month at Bullitt County Public Library!

February 4th, 2017

The Bullitt County Public Library is giving patrons a fresh start in 2016 with Fine Forgiveness February. Through February 28th, the library’s four locations are waiving overdue fines—no matter how long ago the item was checked out—in an effort to encourage people to start coming in again to use the library’s free services and resources. If items have already been returned and there are fines on the account, those can disappear too. Just visit the circulation desk at any BCPL location to request that the charges are cleared.

“We understand that everyone loses track of time once in a while and, above that, we don’t want to unknowingly restrict access to library materials during a time of need,” said Bullitt County Public Library Director Joe Schweiss. “We won’t judge if you have some items that are overdue and you are finally able to stop by and return them. Odds are there are people who want to borrow what you have, and hopefully you will find some new favorites on the shelves when you come in again.”

The Bullitt County Public Library system includes Ridgway Memorial Library in Shepherdsville and branch locations in Hillview, Lebanon Junction, and Mt. Washington. If you have questions about Fine Forgiveness February, please stop in at any BCPL location, call the Ridgway circulation desk at 543-7675, or e-mail Tracy at [email protected].
