Author Guide: Jane Austen

English author Jane Austen was born December 16th, 1775 and through her relatively short life of 41 years, she published six novels that have since become classics. Austen’s prose is first and foremost a biting, ironic critique on 18th-century British gentry, and secondly, a compelling comment on the dependent social standing of women in her time. Notably, her novels mark a transition from novels of sensibility to 19th-century literary realism.
