Join college professor and Kentucky author Bertena Varney to discuss how you can harness the ever-changing pop culture industry—from Harry Potter to Charmed, Supernatural, Buffy, and beyond—to build a profitable writing career.

About Bertena Varney

Bertena Varney is an assistant professor of sociology at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College in Bowling Green, KY. She provides invigorating and interactive discussions on various topics in pop culture inlcuding:

  • Portrayals and perceptions of vampires in folklore and culture, including modern social views;
  • Harry Potter books and their influence on social activism;
  • Feminism and family in Charmed, Buffy, Supernatural, and other fan-favorite television shows;
  • Integrating pop pulture into your curriculum of study; and
  • The history and cultural impact of comic books and superheroes.

Ms. Varney has presented at numerous conferences and events, including Louisville's annual Fright Night Film Fest; The Witching Hour in Salem, MA; ScareFest in Lexington, KY; Fandom Fest in Louisville, KY; Conjuration in Atlanta, GA; Sirens in Vail, CO; NISOD's International Conference in Teaching and Leadership Excellence in Austin, Texas; and the Changing Cultures Conference at Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, KY.
